چکیده

Limited contrast in optical images from intravital microscopy is problematic for analysing tumour vascular morphology. Moreover, in some cases, changes in vasculature are visible to a human observer but are not easy to quantify. In this paper two quantitative on-line algorithms are presented: scale-space vessel tracing and chromatic decomposition for tumour vasculature from in-vivo transmitted light optical images. The algorithms were tested on intravital window chamber images of the vasculature from SW1222 human colorectal carcinomas, which were treated with a vascular disrupting agent combretastatin-A-4-phosphate (CA-4-P) or saline. The results confirmed the wellknown effects of CA-4-P on the constriction of vessels. Furthermore, changes in the chromaticity suggest a deoxygenation of the blood with a recovery to initial levels in CA4-P-treated tumours relative to the controls. The algorithms can be freely applied to any vascular image through the CAIMAN (CAncer IMage ANalysis: http://www.caiman.org.uk).

High Resolution Analysis of Optical and Physical Dot Gain

The printed dots appear bigger than the dots in the original digital bitmap. This is partly because of the spreading and penetrating of the ink on and in the paper, called physical dot gain, and partly because of the diffusion of the light in paper, which is referred to as optical dot gain. Dot gain is often approximated by measurements obtained by densitometer or spectrophotometer. In this stu...

Aberrations of the human eye in visible and near infrared illumination.

PURPOSE In most current aberrometers, near infrared light is used to measure ocular aberrations, whereas in some applications, optical aberration data in the visible range are required. We compared optical aberration measurements using infrared (787 nm) and visible light (543 nm) in a heterogeneous group of subjects to assess whether aberrations are similar in both wavelengths and to estimate e...

Hue-saturation-density (HSD) model for stain recognition in digital images from transmitted light microscopy.

BACKGROUND Transmitted light microscopy is used in pathology to examine stained tissues. Digital image analysis is gaining importance as a means to quantify alterations in tissues. A prerequisite for accurate and reproducible quantification is the possibility to recognise stains in a standardised manner, independently of variations in the staining density. METHODS The usefulness of three colo...
